about brown cow publishing

The Brown Cow public house in the Mold of Daniel Owen's day

Brown Cow was formed in 2010 as a trading name of Jaffa Design Limited and originally came into being to translate and to publish a signature series of ten classic books by the Victorian, Welsh author Daniel Owen. John Mainwaring—director of Brown Cow—comes from a publishing background, working in book cover and magazine design.

Brown Cow is named after a chapter from the first book we published in 2010, a translation of the 1891 novel, Enoc Huws by Daniel Owen. In Chapter 47, Owen introduces the reader to ‘an old-fashioned public house on the edge of town’ called the Brown Cow. Although fictional in the book, there was a pub by that name in Owen’s home town of Mold (pictured opposite). The building still stands to this day at 82 High Street, Mold.

There is an intriguing tale related to the pub’s name ‘Brown Cow’ and how the pub sign brought the pub owners much good fortune while the name was above the door. You can read about that and almost taste the ‘Kelstryn’ and smell the pipe tobacco in this sample chapter.
