description

This enthralling tale of love, hypocrisy and misunderstanding is set against the backdrop of a small town in Victorian North Wales. The local lead mine is being worked by its unscrupulous owner, Captain Trefor, with no hope of any returns for the unfortunate investors who have entrusted their wealth to the Captain. When love blossoms between the Captain’s self-confident daughter, Susi, and the naive and upright Enoc Huws, dramatic complications ensue.

A classic novel by Daniel Owen, the foremost Welsh-language novelist of the 19th century, Profidigaethau Enoc Huws was first published in 1891. With its astute observations of human nature and local characters, the novel has enjoyed immense popularity with Welsh readers for over 100 years. One of the acknowledged masterpieces of the Welsh language, it has been adapted for stage and television (in an early 1974 TV adaptation, and later as Y Dreflan on S4C).

Profidigaethau Enoc Huws was translated into English from its original Welsh by Claud Vivian and serialised in the newspaper Wales. It has never before been published as a book in English. This revised and updated translation by the international poet, comedian and writer, Les Barker, reinstates for the modern reader the wit and colloquial colour of the novel’s original Welsh.
